The Koelbel family's history in the Fraser Valley dates back to
1913 when Buz Koelbel's grandfather, Carl Norgren, came to the
area. Consistent with the fashionable trend of that era, his doctor
had recommended he take advantage of the dry mountain air to help
cure his tuberculosis condition. As he recovered, Carl grew to love
the area and eventually would work as a logger in the valley.
In the 1930's, Carl enrolled his daughter, Gene Norgren, at
Byers Peak Camp near Fraser. Later she would serve as a camp
counselor. When the camp fellon hard times in the 1940's, Carl
Norgren purchased Byers Peak with Askel Neilsen putting it to use
as a cattle ranch and family retreat.
Gene Norgren married Walter Koelbel and they brought their
family to the mountain frequently, making Byers Peak Ranch their
home away fromhome to enjoy all of the abundant natural beauty, as
well as physical and recreational benefits. The Koelbelshave many
fond memories of their family gatherings in the unique geographic
location of the FraserValley, which served as the inspiration for
Rendezvous, a retreat for all seasons, while respecting the natural
setting andhistory as a mountain place for friends and family to
gather.
Regional Heritage
The Fraser Valley has a rich history and unique Rocky Mountain
lifestyle that attracted numerous explorers, trappers, logging and
mining companies, and ranchers that helped establish the heritage
and culture of area. The majesty of the Valley provided numerous
opportunities for people of all walks of life the to gather and
share experiences with one another. This interaction proved to be a
way of life and meaningful for those who inhabited this special
place.
Based on strategic location along the west slope of the great
Continental Divide, this area became a major crossroads for
travelers exploring the West. Over the years visitors arrived from
all directions and by various means of transportation, including
horseback on mountain trails, the stagecoach, Denver Northwest
Pacific Railroad, over Corona and Rollins Pass, later through
Moffat Tunnel and eventually by Highway 40 overBerthoud Pass. For
generations, the gathering of people evolved. A simple rendezvous
of individuals became larger celebrations of groups and community:
a place, a time, an occasion was created.
This rich regional heritage serves as an ideal backdrop for a
mountain resort community of unequaled proportions.
