National Healthy Skin Month

November is National Healthy Skin Month and a good time to assess the condition of your skin. As the seasons change, so does your skin. Here are skin care tips from the American Academy of Dermatology.

Know your skin type. Select products formulated for your type of skin:
• Sensitive—some formulations may burn or sting your skin.
• Normal—Not sensitive and clear.
• Dry—Itchy, flaky or rough.
• Combination—Oily in some areas, dry in others.
• Oily—Greasy or shiny.

Wear sunscreen daily. A broad-spectrum product with an SPF of 30 or higher is ideal. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) offers a free guide on the best sunscreens and safety ratings to help you choose the right product for you and your family.

Maintain a simple skin care routine. Do what dermatologists do and incorporate the three basics: a gentle cleanser, sunscreen, and a moisturizer.

Use lip balm. Use a moisturizing balm with or without sunscreen. Most dermatologists recommend SPF 30 or higher.

Avoid tanning beds. If you are looking for bronzed skin, use a self-tanning product. A tan from the sun is a signal that your skin has been injured. Whether from the sun or a tanning salon, every tan is simply building more and more damage over time and you increase your risk for skin cancer.

Check your skin for irregularities and skin cancer. Lookout for spots that are new, different from others, change in shape, size or color. If you happen to notice something suspicious see a board-certified dermatologist.
